David, or else @kewiki, is a popular Instagram photographer that we discovered a while ago. His work is amazing and we simply wanted to learn more about him. Glad we did!

What does photography mean to you?

For me, photography is a passion. It’s a way for me to capture moments forever and share with the world. There is so much beauty out there that we take for granted and I feel that the lens can do such a wonderful job capturing that beauty. In our busy lives, it’s easy to pass those moments by and forget they even happened. But with photography, we can document those moments for an eternity.

When was the first picture you’ve ever taken?

I think one of the first photos I ever took was of a snowman when I was probably 4 years old. It was with my Dad’s old Pentax 35mm film camera.

When did you join Instagram?

I first joined Instagram at the end of December 2010 along with my wife Holly (@musiccityace)

What’s the secret for a successful Instagram presence for a photographer?

Not sure it’s really a secret. I think it’s more just common sense. For any account to have a good presence, it starts with good content, posting regularly, commenting genuinely and liking other people’s photos. Instagram is about photography and community. Do those two things and you’ll do fine. Keep an eye on the new Explore page too. IG has done an excellent job and creating algorithms that get people noticed. It’s much better than the original popular page.

What’s your favorite way to promote your work?

That’s a hard one. I don’t really promote my work. It’s been organic really. But, one way is to just do collaborations with others. It’s always fun to see how others would edit one of your photos and it’s equally fun to get to edit someone else’s work.

How do you find inspiration?

To find inspiration, you have to keep your eyes open and it will find you. I think some people try way to hard to be inspired. But if you just stay aware of your surroundings and appreciate the beauty in everything, inspiration will be there.

How do you manage to play with the light on such creative ways?

Lots of practice. I’ve been doing this for some time, so you begin to understand timing and angles in order to get the right shots.

Which photography tip would you reveal to a new photographer?

The number one tip I would give to any new photographer is to pay attention to light. Photography is truly all about light. If you can learn the best times of day to shoot and can visualize the final shot, then that’s all you need. You don’t always have to have expensive equipment. Some of my favorite shots were taken with my iPhone. Another tip is to shoot like crazy. Most people will never see every shot I take. I only post what turned out the best.

Which hashtag do you use more?

I used to use hashtags a lot, but since the hashtag has lost its value due to hashtag crashing, I don’t use them as often. But, I typically use #tgif. It’s something we can all relate to.

Is there an Instagram photography tip that you would like to share with us?

If shooting for IG, take your shots horizontally and remember that you’re posting square images. Again, capture moments that are interesting or beautiful. And ease up on the selfies if you want to be taken seriously. Unless they’re artistically done, not everyone likes them. Number one tip is to just have fun and engage. That’s the whole purpose of this app!
